 Should unpaid internships be illegal?

Unpaid internships should be illegal because the work efficiency of the interns would decrease, companies wouldn’t hire the experienced workers, and the unemployment rate of the country would increase.

For students or young adults, even though internships can surely provide a great experience and networking opportunities, it is basically a lot of hard work without getting any benefits. When people work without benefits, the efficiency usually won’t be high. Companies may also exploit the interns and use them as free work. For example, company A recruits 5 unpaid internships. The boss assigns them a very time consuming work saying it’s for their own good. Without getting paid, the interns weren’t motivated to do their work well at all. They would think that they are here just for the experience and not dependent on the company.

Companies may think that using unpaid interns is a very good deal because the company will get free work. However, due to this way of thinking, companies would rather recruit people without needing to pay them than hire experienced workers. This would actually put the company in a worse place because they would need to spend excess time trying to help the interns do their jobs. For example, company B recruits 10 unpaid internships. They thought that their profit would increase because less salary would be paid; however, it actually cost the company even more money, time, and effort to manage the entry-level workers. This could have been prevented if the company just hired experienced workers.

By looking at the issue with the government’s view, it is clear that unpaid interns should be banned because with the help of unpaid internships, the company wouldn’t bother to spend money and hire actual workers. This would cause the unemployment rate of the country to rise because experienced workers won’t be able to find jobs for their desired salary. For example, company C hires 20 unpaid internships. With that many people, the interns quickly finish the assigned tasks after some training. When person A wants to work in this company and hopes for a 8k salary per month, the company would reject them because they already have enough people working for them and they would see no point in spending excess money for hiring experienced people when they can get the same results with 20 unpaid interns.

Unpaid internships should be illegal because the work quality of interns usually won’t be high, companies wouldn’t hire experienced workers, and the unemployment rate would increase. Even though companies may think that not giving out salary while still getting work done is a benefit to them, they must see the cons that are hidden in this situation.
