The global issue I have chosen is “Culture, identity and community”. Today I will focus mainly on gender and discuss how women are treated unequally in working place and women are suffering. The work that I will be analyzing is Ilona Granet's sign "Check Your Wildlife at the Door" designed for Capital Cities/ABC.

Artist purpose:(Thesis)

For Ilona Grant’s sign, the illustrator uses the sign “Check Your WIldlife at the Door” to convey the fact that men have more power than women in the working place and that sexual harassment is happening in working place.

Body 1: People+Object - how these elements can connect and related to the global issue

The author uses many elements in the sign to prove the gender inequality in working place and the issue of sexual harassment. In the middle of the sign, there is a woman who is working hard and answering the phone. Around the woman, there is a document and a phone that she is answering. And there is a working table in the middle and women are using this table to work. By portraying objects such as documents and phones for work, it suggests that women have to work hard, prepare a lot, and become a professional in order to be recognized. While on both sides of the woman, there are men with animal shape heads who try to mess and tease with women. On the left side of the woman, there is a man whose head is a wolf and tries to stick out their tongue and try to eat women. Also, on the right side of the woman, there is a man whose head is a snake and who tries to touch the woman without consent. There is nothing around the men even working goods. By depicting a man with the head of an animal like a wolf or snake, it shows that men are like wild animals that can not control their instinctual sexual feelings towards women and try to sexually harass women. Also, by showing nothing around the men, it shows that men don't need to work hard like women and just tease around especially towards women as sexual harassment.

By depicting the different elements between men and women, it shows gender inequality and power imbalance. Men have the power and time that they can overpower women without trying hard and just relaxing and doing nothing. Through the people and object elements, the artist depicts how society is gender unfriendly and women need to try hard in order to get recognized in the working place without suffering sexual harassment.

Body 2: Caption, Humor (Literary)technique + how these elements can connect and related to the global issue

In addition, in Ilona Granet's sign, the artist puts the caption "Check Your WILDLIFE At The Door" in bold, italic, and capitalized letters. It has the meaning that leaves people's aggressive or predatory behaviors such as sexual harassment towards women behind when entering a place where sexual harassment should not be tolerated. The word "wildlife" suggests that these aggressive behaviors and instincts that can not control by themselves are like wild animals. It is also written in italic letters, which can emphasize and let the audience know the importance of avoiding sexual harassment. By portraying the caption "Check Your WILDLIFE At The Door", the author calls for individuals to be aware of their own behavior such as their uncontrollable aggressiveness and instincts towards women, and to ensure that it does not cross the boundaries of appropriate conduct. It also has the meaning that all individuals have to have a responsibility for their own behavior and actions. It is ironic that the caption is in the middle of the sign, but there is still a man who is trying to sexually harassment to the woman. The author uses irony to sarcasm the current society and gets more attention to the issue that women encounter in the workplace. Moreover, the author added some detailed information about sexual harassment being illegal around the sign. This can let people know more about sexual harassment.

Body 3: Artist technique + Why it has to be sign? (Artist purpose) + how these elements can connect and related to the global issue

Lastly, in Ilona Granet’s sign, the artist uses a unique artist technique to create the sign. The artist uses yellow as the background of the sign with a black thick border. By using the color yellow and black, it can convey a sense of urgency and danger and it can grab people's attention and emphasize the importance of the message.

The artist uses signs to convey the importance of the message because the sign is a visual medium that can easily grab people's attention and convey a message quickly and clearly. It can help to allow people to take action to prevent sexual harassment easily. Also, the sign can be a symbol of resistance or protest. By using a sign to convey the message, Ilona Granet announce that it is important to take responsibility for people's own behavior and creates a safe environment with no sexual harassment.

Conclusion

Ilona Granet's aim is to raise awareness about the issue of sexual harassment and gender inequality in working place and encourage people to take responsibility for their behavior. Ilona Granet conveys her aim through the sign Check Your Wildlife at the Door with many different elements such as people, objects, and captions.
