A slaughter of people that sank democracy, freedom, and human rights in East Asia after the Second World War is worth international recognition and concern. In 1947, the trigger of “White Terror,” the most tangled and unsolved historical trauma stimulated by bloody police violence against an unlicensed smoke vendor and innocent people in Taipei, Taiwan, outbroke. The miscarriage of justice and the apathetic attitude toward the public evoked heated discussion and protests among 700 civilians against the dictated governance and later stormed Taiwan. Unfortunately, the nightmare scenario only irritated the ruling to silence any free speech with the political hegemony by KMT, known as “White Terror,” with over 200 thousand wronging trials and 1000+ suspicious murders from 1949 to 1987.

The gloomy 38 years retained its victims, and Chen Chin-Shen was one of them. Born in Malaysia, the young man started his college years in Taiwan in 1965. Endeavor and self-motivated, he read English magazines at the United States Information Agency branch in Tainan. Little did he know the tragedy loomed large. In 1971, the year after the bomb case at the agency, he was detained during his visit to Taipei. Injustice crept into Chen’s life as a secret investigation agency forced a false confession from Chen: water irrigating, needling into nails, and more unbearable suffering on this innocent young man. However, he did not abandon hope and confronted the corrupted legal system with integrity and bravery. Chen insisted that he had nothing to do with the criminal, appealed a judicial case, and finally won him pride and justice with an amendment from a life sentence to an 8-year prison sentence.
