Introduction:

各位同學好,我是Shelly。

這堂課How to Write Right? Introduction to Effective English Writing的目的不是希望大家成為寫作大師,而是希望透過循序漸進的英語寫作學習,讓大家掌握英語寫作特殊的架構。

我們在十週包含了以下內容:認知並處理寫作常見的「卡關」、把話說清楚與豐富內容、用英語寫作架構建立段落(paragraph)、閱讀並分析好的段落、與同儕與教師討論寫作元素、應用搭配詞字典讓文章更道地,最後產出屬於自己的英語寫作段落,並於未來需要英語寫作的場合(如,申請學校,英語檢定),以簡潔、快速的架構寫作輔助自己。

希望這堂寫作入門課能以英語寫作的「最大公因數」,幫助所有以英語作為第二語言、也需要以英語寫作溝通、展示意見、甚至行之創作的同學們。


Classroom Rule: 

Equality and inclusiveness are the two fundamental principles in this classroom.

This is a safe environment for anyone to express their experience, testimony, or/and research on various issues with our weekly reading material. Personal information should be confidential among the participants. Respect everyone’s remarks although intense, constructive discussion is more than welcomed. Step up/step back policy is also important for every individual to have a chance to voice out. 


Reading before the class, giving constructive peer review commentary, and doing your writing are required.


How to Write Right? Introduction to Effective English Writing 


Week 1. “Writer’s Block” and how to overcome it 


Week 2. Clarify the sentence: 5W1H and reading out loud 


Week 3. How to structure a paragraph? 


Week 4. Model essay reading and make use of collocation dictionary

Assignment1: 

Write a paragraph with an assigned topic. 

It is mandatory but not graded. If not submitted, it will lead to 20% deduction of your participation points. 

Please kindly practice what we have taught in the class in preparation for your final project. Collocation dictionary is also highly recommended in effective, precise English writing if you are a writer having English as a second language. 


Please type your paragraph in Times New Roman, 12, double-spaced. Print two copies, one for the peer review next week and another is for the instructor. Thank you so much for the help.


Week 5. Peer review: clarify and structure the paragraph

Please team up as a  2 to 3 people group to have peer review on your assignment 1. Give constructive commentary to your classmates. That is, what are some of the great things? What are some things that can be better? How can it be better? What are some other alternatives to try out (wording, tone, perspective, etc.)? 


Week 6. Model essay reading & Individual conference 

Final project guidance: 

Write at least a paragraph to submit as your final project and have three weekly, individual conferences with the structure for clarification, discussion, and revision to help you to source or/and build your own writing.  


Each person will have approximately 5 to 20 minutes for the individual conference, depending on the size of the class. One absence from the conference or/and zero progress of your project deduct 30% of your mark on the final project. 


Please type your paragraph in Times New Roman, 12, double-spaced. Print one copy for the instructor. Thank you so much for the help.


Week 7. Model essay analyzing & Individual conference

Same instruction as Week6. With the lessons before, please demonstrate your understanding and analyzing skill on effective English writing to do self-directed teaching in reading, language learning, and literature review. 


Week 8. Model essay analyzing & Individual conference

Same instruction as Week 6. With the lessons before, please demonstrate your understanding and analyzing skill on effective English writing to teach yourself in reading, language learning, and literature review. 

Week 9. Office hours

Full two hours for advising if the participants would like to polish their piece and inquire topics related to effective English Writing.


Week 10. Final presentation & (Optional) reading of your favorite piece 

Please type your work in Times New Roman, 12, single-spaced. Also, email the piece to the instructor’s email by the Sunday of Week 9. Print in the number of the participants and the instructor. Thank you so much for the help.


Grading Policy: 

Attendance 20% 

Two excused absences are allowed before the class by email to the instructor or by post on Google Classroom. One unexcused absence or another excused absence deducts 10% of your attendance point. Three unexcused absences lead to an F. 

However, if there's a personal/family emergency, please don’t hesitate to let me know and we can definitely accommodate individualized deadlines and requirements.


Participation 40%

Participation in class is highly appreciated and crucial to build a community with genuine and interactive communication and prepare yourself as a future opinion leader of your generation for some uphill challenges.


Final project presentation 40% 

Please send a digital copy of your writing to the instructor's email and have the hard copy of the number of people in this class on Week10. Negotiation after the deadline is dismissed. Please submit your work in time to give all parties enough time to work on the administrative task.
