NASA's Research on Climate Change | Above and Beyond
Summary
This video involves a lot of outstanding researchers in NASA to introduce what is climate change, how they do research on it, and why it is crucial to us. NASA has observed and predicted climate change with factual, solid research throughout long years. With the monitor system from space, they have conducted research on severe climate change, the phenomenon that is against seasonal mechanisms and doesn’t really surge until the great consumption and burning of fossil fuel starting from the Industrial Revolution. It is affecting Mother Earth because it does not also bring more natural disasters, it could kill coastal countries as well on a national level. In the end, a scientist calls for attention to climate change for we will live on a different planet with this ongoing trend.
Question
Why does the first speaker so confidence and assure that NASA has unique capabilities? Please also transcribe the system he mentioned in your short answer.
Please summarize the cycling mechanism of CO2’s increasing and decreasing nature in the atmosphere.
Pick two important keywords, whether historical or environmental ones, that have released old carbon back into the atmosphere a lot faster than the oceans and the plants on the land can take out of the atmosphere?
Draw a Keeling Curve
What are the two crucial years of Keeling Curve that the speaker has mentioned
Fill in question: We’ve seen this warming over the last century and half. Vey, very ______measurements and it shows a really sharp ______in the warming over the last four_____.
T/F question: Scientists have seen the ice melting really fast on the polar area of the earth.
What is the interval year to combine scientists’ data with global climate models and say the sea level is gonna change? (hint: do the math! Don’t transcribe!)
Choose the commentary that the scientist has NOT suggested on their research
It has as few mistakes as possible
It is open to people
It follows fact
It is awarded.
What consequences can a warmer atmosphere lead to? List three of them.
Answer
Because they have the point of view from space with NASA’s carbon monitoring system
CO2 increases in the atmosphere in fall and winter (because plants and animals are releasing the carbon dioxide that was captured during the growing season), and decreases in spring.
Choose two of them: Burning fossil, Industrial Revolution, Coal, Oil, Nature gas
(It should be a slash going up on the right with little slashes inside to make a Keeling Curve.)
1989,2016
Meticulous, acceleration, decades
T
5 years
(D). Reference: We’re taking the most precise data that we can. It is open data. It is factual.
More convection. More big thunderstorms. More hurricanes. More extreme weather.
Critique
I think this video is a great choice for advanced listeners in several aspects. First, the video is composed with a clear structure. It delivers the message in concern of climate changes with reason and scientifically proven research, and at the same time, does not bombard us listeners with information because of its clear structure to give out the most highlighted one. Second, the speaking pace of the speakers in the video is moderate and calm with informative, educational content, which definitely sticks to the first aspect. Third, this video is made with a focus on script and statistics and a proper portion of visual aids. Graphic charts and motions don’t take over the presentation of climate-changing by NASA scientists. We are not distracted by most visual elements as many YouTube videos will do. With these three aspects, I think this is a highly recommended piece for advanced listeners.
