The Eight Planets

Instructor: Shelly Shih

  • Once upon a time, there were NINE planets…and planets mean…"wandering stars” 流浪的星星 in Greek

  1. 水星(Mercury)

  2. 金星(Venus)

  3. 地球(Earth)

  4. 火星(Mars)

  5. 木星(Jupiter)

  6. 土星(Saturn)

  7. 天王星(Uranus)

  8. 海王星(Neptune)

  9. 冥王星(Pluto)

  • BUT! Something unfortunate happened…

    1. Pluto was outvoted!

    2. the reason why it is outvoted by institution is because

      • it is not a round planet

      • it is too small in mass

      • the orbit of Pluto is an exception from other ones in the Solar System

  • So, there are only EIGHT planets in the Solar System, and let's check out their features and know more about the sky.

  • Mercury

Do you think there is tons of water in Mercury 水星?

It's actually very heated. Not a drip of water can stay on Mercury.

It is also the smallest planet in the Solar System so it outraces other planets in orbiting! A fast runner, Mercury! Mercury also means 水銀, so the name if this planet suggests that it is grayish silver from some observation.

  • Venus

Wow, VENUS! you have must heard of it, because it is the infamous but sexually attractive goddess in Greek, 維納斯

She also represents LOVE and LUST in Greek mythology.

Venus the planet has its milky white look but somehow resembles the planet we're living on, EARTH, in mass and size. How interesting! But, there is no oxygen but some toxic substances in the air, so we cannot immigrate to Venus. The typical landscape you can find on Venus are deserts and eroded rocks. Sounds like an extreme climate!

  • Earth

Home sweet home, EARTH. The name comes from the Goddess of the land, Gaia, in Greek mythology. The planet is unique because it has oxygen, an ocean, a great population, and four seasons in cycle. Moreover, it is scientifically proven that Earth is the ONLY planet that prepares an environment for species to evolve (by far). We are lucky to be born, live, and our generations on this wonderfully made planet, aren't we?

  • Mars

Mars, 火星, looks like it is caught on FIRE, doesn't it? It is covered with reddish iron, so it looks RED. Therefore, the reddish feature earns it a nickname, "The Red Planet". Mars is also a name of the War God, Ares, who is strong, bad tempered, and monstrous in slaughtering during war. What makes him infamous is that he has an affair with Venus, the erotic goddess we have known. However, if you think Mars is also heated because of the color red, like Mercury, you are definitely wrong! Mars is very FREEZING. It is extremely cold. The landscape on it is full of sand and little rocks, and some Ice Cap on the north of the planet.

  • Jupiter

Jupiter, a super large planet we can see! It is light, but it is huge! What is more scary is that storms are everywhere on this planet. And look! There's a red dot in this photo! We can also spot some traces that wind has left on this planet even with the telescope. Don't be too surprised if you see lightning. This planet got a lot of lightning, creating thundering sounds. Speaking of thunder, do you know which God holds the ultimate power and authority in Greek mythology and got the name of Jupiter? Excellent, it's Zeus! The almighty God of all Greek gods and goddesses. Isn't that interesting to see some parallel between Jupiter and Zeus?

  • Saturn

Oh wow, look at this big ring around Saturn! I bet it is the first thing that you notice from Saturn. Saturn looks like a CD, or a huge runway with a stadium. How would you describe this special planet? The God related to this unusual plant is the God of agriculture, Saturnurs. But some people refer the origin to Zeus' father, Kronos, the God of time. Unlike Jupiter, it has ice in its core with an iron coat, and the wind on the planet is so fast and fierce. Even nowadays, scientists are still not sure the mechanism of the ring around Saturn. It is something unsolved and we welcomed our little scientists to join the thinking tank and make progress!

  • Uranus

Uranus goes in a way different from other planets, right? It seems that it's laying on the bed. A lazy planet! Because it is special in it's way,  it is the first planet discovered by us human beings with a  telescope.

Uranus got its name from Uranus, the father of Kronos, the grandfather of Zeus. Uranus represents hope and the  future, and He is probably looking down! Why? Because He is the Sky God in Greek Mythology! Yet, it is the most FREEZING planet you can find in the Solar System. This lazy old grandfather planet is not very friendly for some of the population to grow.

  • Neptune

Neptune, a navy blue planet. It gave us the impression that this is a quiet place. However, it doesn't bring in calmness and tranquility. It has the most fierce storm among all the planets. It also got a big spot, GDS-89. It is a dark one, so scientists believe that this is a particular area that is windless. What we should be aware of is that it is very cold. In 1989, scientists have found out that the temperature of the cloud is -224 °C. With this introduction, don't you also agree it is lucky for us.to live on this lovely planet, Earth?
